Christina De Angelis, Unconscious Racism Coach, Specialist Practitioner, Mediator and Restorative Practices Facilitator
Christina's passion is to help people find effective and non-violent ways to transform their conflicts and create systems to respond to crises that are aligned with the values of nonviolence and restorative justice. As a social worker with over 20 years experience in family systems, child protection, education and mental health, she continues to bring her systemic lens to all her work through the dual social work perspective of seeing people within their environments. |
Christina was a Rotary World Peace Fellow at the Institut de Sciences Politiques, Paris and the Peace Studies department of the University of Bradford where she completed a Masters in Conflict Resolution.
A mediator since 2007, Christina has specialised in family and community mediation and restorative justice practices. She spent over nine months in Brazil studying the origins, methodology and use of Restorative Circles whilst on an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. She was awarded a double Masters in Intercultural mediation from the Université de Lille, France and the Universitatea Babes-Bolyai, Romania. After several years of extensive study of restorative justice theory and practice, Christina has applied Restorative Circles in her own local community in France and accompanies families, and organisations in the creation of their own restorative systems.
For the last 15 years, Christina has facilitated trainings and workshops on non-violence, conflict transformation, reconciliation, unconscious racism, non-violent communication, mediation and restorative justice in various countries. Examples of this work include facilitating workshops with local partners in the Solomon Islands following their civil conflict, training the new Police force in Northern Ireland, reconciliation workshops for youth of diverse ethnic backgrounds in Ukraine, teaching courses at Universities in the UK, France and Australia, training youth in Europe through Erasmus programmes, training tax officers in Australia, offering reflective training for judges in Brazil and working as an expert consultant in restorative justice and training for the European Forum of Restorative Justice.
Recognising that we are all impacted by being part of invisible systems of domination and oppression, Christina has been working on herself and with others to examine and engage with the impacts of our current domination system, white privilege, systemic racism and oppression. In particular, how to notice and uncover our unconscious racism and the impact of that on people of colour, replacing white fragility with care and responsibility.
In 2018 Christina developed the concept of Holding Circles as a way to ensure support for nonviolence activists and restorative justice practitioners. “Holding Circles are intentional communities of people who join together for connection, care, inspiration, accountability, support and celebration. They rest on the belief that being connected, giving and receiving in life-supporting relationships is the very heart of our humanity. It is also what empowers us to be the best we can be and to contribute to others and the world. “ - Christina De Angelis
